I'm Kayira John Mwesigwa, an artist based in Kampala, Uganda. Ever since I can remember, art has been my greatest passion. From a young age, I was drawn to drawing and sketching, and this love for creating has only grown stronger over the years. As I went through high school, I found that art allowed me to express feelings, thoughts, and ideas that I couldn’t quite put into words. It became my personal way of communicating with the world.
My work primarily revolves around creating portraits using charcoal pencil on paper. This medium lets me bring a raw and intimate feel to the portraits I create. A lot of my work focuses on delivering messages of hope, confidence, and courage—concepts that resonate deeply with me and the experiences many people go through. For instance, one of my pieces aims to show that pain, though often overwhelming, is only a temporary part of life. It’s a reminder that, while tough moments may come, they don’t last forever.
In addition to my traditional portrait work, I’ve developed a technique that lets me play with perspective. By positioning two different portraits within a single artwork, I create pieces that change depending on how you look at them. As you move around the artwork, the image shifts and a new portrait emerges. This technique allows me to pack more storytelling into each piece, offering multiple perspectives or emotions within a single frame. I’ve found that this adds depth to my work and gives people more to think about as they engage with the art from different angles
